Rifleman detained

Imphal, June 7 : IRB rifleman Kangjam Dimajit Singh, who was arrested in connection with the killing of economics professor Md Islamuddin, was remanded in judicial custody and detained under the National Security Act till June 20.
Singh, a resident of Imphal, was arrested on May 30. Members of the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup had gunned down Islamuddin near the Manipur University library on May 25.
The court of the Imphal additional chief judicial magistrate, R.K. Memcha, today sent him to judicial custody.
The court in its ruling said it was satisfied that the allegations against the rifleman were well founded.
The police charged that the rifleman was involved in the professor’s killing but did not disclose the details of the involvement of the police, who said an investigation was in progress.
It was also not disclosed whether Dimajit is a cadre of the outfit or how he got himself involved in the crime.
The police said the rifleman was detained under the NSA.
With this, the number of accused in the case who were detained under the NSA, has gone up to six.
The police have arrested 14 accused in the case.
Barring the rifleman, the rest of the accused are students.
While eight of the students were released on bail on June 2, the remaining five are being detained under the NSA.
