Security strengthened in Meghalaya:Guv

Shillong, Mar17 : In the backdrop of recent bomb blasts in neighbouring Assam, the ruling Meghalaya Progressive Alliance has decided to strengthen security by introducing modern equipment and specialised manpower.

The importance of internal security has increased tremendously in view of the recent bomb blasts in Assam and terror attack in Mumbai, Governor RS Mooshahary informed the Assembly today.

In his conventional address to the law-makers, the governor said steps had also been taken to prevent misuse of arms and explosives which could disrupt peace and tranquility.

”The construction of border fencing needs to be expedited in order to check influx and improve security in the border,” he said, stressing that the matter will continue to be pursued proactively keeping in mind the interest of the people and the state.

On the increased incidence of crime against women and children, Mr Mooshahary said the government had notified separate women police stations in all the seven districts of the state.

He said these police stations would not only look after the investigation of cases but also deal with matters relating to crime against children.

On militancy, the former National Security Guard chief said the government had broken the backbone of militancy in the state and 23 ultras of different groups had joined the mainstream.
